Key Considerations when designing and building any timber structure:
- Design: A functional and well-thought-out design is essential to ensure your outdoor timber structure is safe and that it complies with strict building standards. These plans can be provided by architects, landscapers, or homeowners, or our Master Decks sales team can offer this service free of charge.
- Structure: The sub structure needs to be strong functional. It can be constructed with hardwood or Tanalized® SA Pine, balancing considerations of cost, visibility, and aesthetics. The design options are endless, but they are always designed with functionality in mind.
- Material: Choose from a wide range of natural timbers available in Cape Town to achieve the desired color, feel, and atmosphere. Master Decks offers materials from exotics to sustainable options, including Garapa, Balau, Chamfuta, Cumaru, Ekki, Ipe, Iroko, Jarrah, Macaranduba, Purple Heart, Zambian Teak, Zimbabwe Teak, and more. We can guide you on selecting suitable materials for pergolas, considering their performance under South African UV conditions. Options include composite materials from trusted manufacturers such as Enviro Deck, Moso Bamboo, Eva Last, and Trex.
- Fixing: The method of fixing the timbers varies, from visible screws to plugged screws to different hidden fixing systems. For hard timbers like Garapa or Balau, we recommend using stainless steel screws. Hidden or secret fixings may not be suitable for all timber types due to natural expansion and contraction. Composite materials, however, are well-suited for secret fixing.
- Finish: All natural timbers will silver/grey over time and do not require any maintenance. Clients can however consider various sealing or staining options to maintain the natural wood colours or even elevate them to a new level. (note: This means annual maintenance will be required to maintain the look)
