A well-constructed and functional fence or privacy screen isn’t just an enhancement to your property; it’s an investment in your lifestyle. At Master Decks, we understand the importance of thoughtfully crafted structures that not only enhance your outdoor living and entertainment areas but are also fit for purpose and adhere to strict building and technical regulations. At Master Decks, our screens and fences strictly adhere to the rigorous NBSA regulations.

Our dedicated team at Master Decks is here to address your inquiries and schedule a meeting to discuss essential considerations for planning your fence or privacy screen.

Scroll through the gallery below to see examples of projects we have completed in the past.

Key Considerations when designing and building a Fence or screen:

  1. Design: A functional and well-thought-out design is essential to maximize the potential of your screen. Plans can be provided by architects, landscapers, or homeowners, or our Master Decks sales team can offer this service free of charge.
  2. Structure: The supporting structure needs to be strong enough to accommodate the cladding on the fence or screen. It can be constructed with hardwood or Tanalized® SA Pine, balancing considerations of cost, visibility, and aesthetics. Support posts range from simple turned Tanapoles to double timber, brick and plaster, or ornate precast pillars.
  3. Material: Choose from a wide range of natural timbers available in Cape Town to achieve the desired color, feel, and atmosphere. Master Decks offers materials from exotics to sustainable options, including Garapa, Balau, Chamfuta, Cumaru, Ekki, Ipe, Iroko, Jarrah, Macaranduba, Purple Heart, Zambian Teak, Zimbabwe Teak, and more. We can guide you on selecting suitable materials for pergolas, considering their performance under South African UV conditions. Options include composite materials from trusted manufacturers such as Enviro Deck, Moso Bamboo, Eva Last, and Trex.
  4. Fixing: The method of fixing the timbers varies, from visible screws to plugged screws to different hidden fixing systems. For hard timbers like Garapa or Balau, we recommend using two stainless steel screws per joist for each plank. Hidden or secret fixings may not be suitable for all timber types due to natural expansion and contraction. Composite decking, however, is well-suited for secret fixing.
  5. Finish: All natural timbers will silver/grey over time and do not require any maintenance. Clients can however consider various sealing or staining options to maintain the natural wood colours or even elevate them to a new level. (note: This means annual maintenance will be required to maintain the look)
